Polokwane - Sector policing can be used as a tool to reduce crime. Sector Policing is an approach to policing where the service area of a police station is divided into smaller, manageable areas known as sectors.
- The South African Police Services (SAPS) appoint a police official known as a sector commander for every sector.
- Their role is to mobilise the community in the sector to collectively take action against crime that happens in their neighbourhoods.
- They also act as a liaison between the community of the sector and the local police station.
Furthermore, sector commanders act as crime prevention officers, which involves being responsible for all plans and projects to address crime in the sector.
The Polokwane public is urged to partner with sector commanders to actively ensure safety and security in their local surroundings.
The Polokwane, Seshego & Mankweng communities must also launch and participate in the neighbourhood initiatives to safeguard the area in which they live. The public must attend Sector Crime Forum meetings to discuss action plans with the sector commander in order to deal with crime in the sector. Lastly, the community must assist by providing information and suggestions for the prevention of crime in their sector.
