The vast 35000ha Balule Game Reserve, is a land block situated between Phalaborwa and the village of Mica, bordering on the Kruger Park. The iconic Olifants River runs for approximately 20 km through Balule, adding a great atmosphere and source of attraction for both wildlife and visitors. Since there is no fence between Balule and Kruger Park, the Big Five roam freely into this reserve, whilst hippo and crocodile abound in the river.
The Balule reserve came into existence 14 years ago when some enterprising farm owners agreed to drop their fences, expanding as the initiative was gradually joined by more land owners. Balule offers relative exclusivity to the visitor in rustic to luxurious accommodation, on the banks of the Olifants river. Both the modern town of Phalaborwa the Kruger Park Phalaborwa gate , is nearby.
